Nat Cole! he had incredible timing, both as a singer and piano player. in fact, he was on my list originally, and then was forgotten about.

yeah, I forgot about Paul Brady too; mostly i know him from his duet album with Andy Irvine, which is spectacular. I couldn't say much for anything he did in the world of rock

come to think about it, Ralph Stanley was a pretty great banjo player, considering his style preceded the three-finger style of Earl Scruggs. and he's gotta be one of the greatest singers in bluegrass history.

and then of course there's Ron Thomason, who combines great singing, multi-instrumental talent, and best-in-the-field frontman (his stage presence and jokes are legendary)

thanks all, you're giving me fodder for future postsThe Irate Piratehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11424429160753219350noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6395909822324046048.post-30994555603560511432009-04-21T12:35:00.000-06:002009-04-21T12:35:00.000-06:00Surely Nat King Cole has to be near the top of thi...Surely Nat King Cole has to be near the top of this list?!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6395909822324046048.post-47164009259690221742009-04-20T11:12:00.000-06:002009-04-20T11:12:00.000-06:00Merle Haggard is formidable as well. Charley Patton was the king, I should never have denied it...

Joni Mitchell, yes, she's actually quite accomplished as a guitarist, having composed in about 19 different tunings, and she also plays piano. Though she's much more of a composer on those instruments than a really expert player.

I'll confess never having listened to much Prince. The 80s never quite sat with me...

Lydia Mendoza! I hadn't even thought about her for a while; I'll have to get back to her. Roscoe was amazing in his own way, sure, just like Boggs was.

So far it looks like Skip James is winning...

And I haven't heard of Amede Ardoin. Maybe songwriter, depending on how much credit you give him for 'I'm so glad."

Generally, it seems like you have to pick any 2.

But on the other hand, Prince. (I guess he's a pretty good singer, and I'm sure he's a brilliant guitarist and writer). Stevie Wonder, too.

For rock, it seems like there's more of a fudge factor - can't think of triple-threats w/o a lot of special pleading. For example, no sane person wd say Neil Young's a brilliant technical guitarist, or singer, but on the other hand, he seems get done what he wants to, and with plenty of feeling.(and he's one of a handful of guys who've mastered acoustic and electric).

Dylan, well, obviously hardly a singer at all, but maybe a great vocalist? Certainly the thousands of rockers and folkies he influenced must have thought so. (or else they thought, hell, *anybody* can do that.) And I'd say he's a hugely underrated guitarist, at least since the 90's.

It'd be too much of a stretch to call Richard Thompson a *good* singer I think, guess he has to settle for 2 categories of genius. Van Morrison, I kind of don't think his guitar playing will get him into the club either.

Joni Mitchell, though, maybe- she's at the very least a damned good rhythm player.

I'm sure I'll probably think of others as soon as I hit post', but that shd do for now I guess.hap hazardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16339026984545324089noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6395909822324046048.post-83118261779852955392009-04-19T09:43:00.000-06:002009-04-19T09:43:00.000-06:00touchétouchéThe Irate Piratehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11424429160753219350noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6395909822324046048.post-25870189154721826702009-04-19T07:57:00.000-06:002009-04-19T07:57:00.000-06:00Charlie Patton was the greatest of all.The 78rpm s...Charlie Patton was the greatest of all.The 78rpm surface noise doesn`t obscure his obviously superb vocals and guitar-you just need the dedication to listen-it all shines through.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6395909822324046048.post-89627734955596112902009-04-19T07:51:00.000-06:002009-04-19T07:51:00.000-06:00Cryin`Sam Collins,Dock Boggs,Clarence Ashley,King ...Cryin`Sam Collins,Dock Boggs,Clarence Ashley,King Solomon Hill,Richard"rabbit"brown,Tommy Johnson,Bill Monroe,Dave Macon,Robert Wilkins,Robert pete Williams,man..i could go on forever-so many.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
